Encouraging young Laval residents to talk about inclusivity
Enabling dialogue for youth, by youth
October 30, 2020 – Laval, Quebec – Inclusivity is a concern for all young people in Laval, not just those from diverse backgrounds. In an effort to encourage dialogue on this topical issue, the constituency youth council of Angelo Iacono, MP for Alfred–Pellan, held a virtual conference on Tuesday, October 27.
Panelist and HEC Montréal student Stacey Lang said it was essential to “be the change, instead of asking for it.” Over the course of the event, about thirty young Laval residents were able to share their points of view on different aspects of inclusiveness, particularly how each person can bring about positive change. By working together to come up with thoughtful solutions, young people become vectors of change and, as Marwa Khanafer, panelist and project manager in the field of civic engagement, pointed out, “an inclusive society is a successful society.” Giving Laval young people a platform to share their perspectives is another way to ensure that all people are included in efforts to improve our communities.
“As we’ve seen over the course of this virtual conference, our young people’s ability to listen, show solidarity and be transparent are truly inspiring,” said Mr. Iacono. “I have no doubt that by involving them in discussions on issues that directly affect them, we are creating leaders who will make the well-being of our communities a top priority.”
