The Hon. David Lametti, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, meets with the Laval legal community

For a modern, responsive and robust justice system

April 15, 2019 – Laval (Quebec) – Angelo Iacono, MP for Alfred–Pellan, invited the Laval legal community and the Honourable David Lametti, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, to come together and discuss issues relevant to the administration of justice in Canada.

Canada's legal system is strong thanks to the trust placed in it by Canadians. It is unique and subject to reforms that ensure that the legal and justice system is in line with society’s constant evolution and can adapt to the challenges faced by our communities. Maintaining the dialogue within the legal community is essential for ensuring a modern, responsive and robust justice system that continues to evolve and fulfill its purpose.

The response from the Laval legal community was positive, given that nearly 50 people attended, including Normand Haché, President of the Bar of Laval. Participants talked to each other and realized that they share a common objective: to ensure that Canadians trust the legal system, which can only be achieved through real, positive change. As Angelo Iacono, MP for Alfred–Pellan, said during the event: “Canadians deserve to have access to information and services that help them better understand and exercise their rights under the law. By maintaining an open dialogue within the legal community, we are ensuring that the legal system remains responsive, effective and respected.”

Angelo Iacono, MP for Alfred–Pellan, is proud of this successful initiative, which established a direct contact between the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada and the Laval legal community. The Honourable David Lametti reiterated that the government in power is a “progressive and forward-looking government that has a solid record but does not take it for granted.” The minister also highlighted the major legislative progress accomplished on files that had been stagnant for decades such as sexual assault legislation and the family court system in Canada. Participants were very interested in the themes that were discussed, which included cannabis, medical assistance in dying and criminal justice. By working together, we can make the Canadian justice system prosper.
