Angelo Iacono tours Alfred-Pellan companies affected by steel and aluminum tariffs
The Government of Canada is defending companies and workers in the steel and aluminum industries
October 26, 2018 – Laval, Quebec – This past summer, the United States announced punitive customs tariffs on Canadian aluminum and steel In response to these unjustified and unjustifiable measures, the Government of Canada applied matching countermeasures to support our businesses and workers in the steel and aluminum industries affected by this inappropriate decision.
During the weeks of October 14 and 22, 2018, Angelo Iacono, MP for Alfred-Pellan, toured the companies operating in the aluminum and steel sectors in his riding. To comprehend the magnitude of the impact that the steel and aluminum tariffs were having on Alfred-Pellan firms, the MP visited and met with company officials and discussed the state of the metallurgical industry in Eastern Laval.
On October 11, 2018, the Government of Canada took further action, implementing measures to prevent diversion of foreign steel products into Canada and provide targeted relief to steel and aluminum users. In particular, a process was established for Canadian companies to request targeted relief from surtaxes collected on steel, aluminum and certain other products imported from the U.S. so that Canadian producers can meet domestic demand. The MP for Alfred-Pellan made sure that the companies he visited had the information they needed to assess their eligibility for the relief measures and the tools to apply for them.
It is vital to support our steel and aluminum industries, as they employ thousands of Canadians across the country. Through the new measures announced, the Government of Canada continues to defend the interests of Canadians in response to the unjustified customs duties levied by the United States.
