Supporting Laval workers with a redesigned emergency wage subsidy

July 28, 2020 – Laval, Quebec – The Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) is protecting jobs in Laval by helping businesses keep employees on the payroll and by encouraging employers to rehire workers previously laid off. Since its launch, the CEWS has supported close to 3 million jobs across Canada.

Today, Alfred–Pellan MP Angelo Iacono announced changes to the CEWS that will provide increased support while enabling workers to return to their jobs quickly as the economy restarts. The changes would:

  • Extend the CEWS until December 19, 2020.
  • Enable more employers to receive the CEWS by including businesses with a revenue decline of less than 30% and providing a gradually decreasing base subsidy.
  • In addition, employees of businesses that currently use the CEWS will continue to be supported even if those businesses’ revenues exceed the 30% threshold.
  • Introduce a top-up subsidy of up to an additional 25% for employers that have been hardest hit by the pandemic. This would be particularly helpful to employers in industries that are recovering more slowly.
  • Address certain technical issues identified by stakeholders.

The proposed changes to the CEWS will continue to protect jobs and promote growth in Laval by making it easier for workers to return to their jobs and supporting businesses as their revenues increase. Our government is continuing to assess the impacts of COVID-19 and will do what is necessary to support our communities.

Quote

“The wage subsidy has provided essential support to help Laval workers keep their jobs during the pandemic. Many businesses have remained afloat thanks to this federal assistance, and we are confident that the new changes will help it become a catalyst for Laval’s economic recovery.”

– Angelo Iacono, MP for Alfred–Pellan
